MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DECEMBER 2020
In December, we kicked the holiday films to the curb and gave you "A very Bond Christmas!" Four of our favorite, James Bond films. We know you've got your favorites; feel free to share them with us on our CONTACT PAGE.
Picture
Picture
"Goldfinger" (1964 MGM) Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, Bernard Lee, Lois Maxwell, Desmond Llewelyn, Shirley Eaton, Tania Mallet, Harold Sakata. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Hulu.
  • You can't call yourself a "Bond" fan if you've never seen "Goldfinger." This film is the third Bond film and a true classic. Honestly, all Bond plots are silly, but you're watching it for the action sequences and the cool spy gadgets. Goldfinger has plenty, and it's our favorite of the "Sean Connery" Bond era.

Picture
"For Your Eyes Only" (1981 United Artists) Roger Moore, Carole Bouquet, Desmond Llewelyn, Lois Maxwell, Topol, Lynn-Holly Johnson, Jack Hedley, Julian Glover, Cassandra Harris. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Hulu.
  • "For Your Eyes Only" is our all time favorite Bond film. A 1981 classic! Seriously it's the best Bond film. Skiing, skating, car chases, underwater fights, Sharks! Keelhauling! This film has it all. "For Your Eyes only" is the best film of the "Roger Moore" Bond era.
Picture
Picture
"GoldenEye" (1995 MGM) Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, Izabella Scorupco, Famke Janssen, Judi Dench, Desmond Llewelyn, Samantha Bond, Alan Cumming. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Netflix.
  • The first Bond film of the 90s with the long-awaited first appearance by Pierce Brosnan in Bond's role. The "Brosnan" Bond era was short-lived, with only four films, and while "Tomorrow Never Dies" is probably the best of the "Brosnan" Bond era, we like GoldenEye better. Watch them both and judge for yourself.

"Casino Royale"  (2006 Columbia Pictures) Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Judi Dench, Mads Mikkelsen, Jeffrey Wright, Giancarlo Giannini, Caterina Murino, Malcolm Sinclair. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Netflix.
  • "Casino Royale" is the first film of the "Daniel Craig" Bond Era, and while it is technically a remake (the third film adaptation of Ian Fleming's 1953 Novel), this 2006 version is also a reboot of the Bond series. Danial Craig portrays a younger, more serious Bond. In our opinion, this is the best version of Casino Royale, and its 2008 follow-up "Quantum of Solace" is also well done, solidifying Danial Craig as a James Bond for newer generations of film fans.

MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NOVEMBER 2020

“Lions for Lambs" (2007, MGM) Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise, Michael Peña, Derek Luke, Andrew Garfield, Kevin Dunn. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on STARZ.
  • “Lions for Lambs, released in 2007 to less than stellar reviews, we, however, feel that this is a highly underrated film. Directed by Robert Redford based on a screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom, World War Z, State of Play), “Lions for Lambs” features excellent performances from all involved. We feel it may be one of Tom Cruise’s best roles since “A Few Good Men.” Check it out; if nothing else, it may only strengthen your will to vote!

Picture
“Swing Vote" (2008 Touchstone Pictures) Kevin Costner, Madeline Carroll, Paula Patton, Kelsey Grammar, Dennis Hopper, Nathan Lane, Stanley Tucci, George Lopez, Judge Reinhold. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • It’s a highly preposterous scenario, but what if the Presidential election all came down to the vote of one man? This comedy-drama from 2008 asks you to set aside your disbelief and imagine just that—great performances by Kevin Costner and Madeline Carroll.
Picture
Picture
“The Front Runner" (2018 Columbia Pictures) Hugh Jackman, Vera Farmiga, J.K. Simmons, Molly Ephraim, Mark O’Brien, Chris Coy, Kailyn Dever, Alex Karpovsky. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on STARZ.
  • Based on the real-life 1987 Presidential campaign of U.S. Senator Gary Hart, “The Front Runner” is a must-see film for all who are interested in political history. We feel it’s one of Hugh Jackman’s best roles.
Picture
Picture
“Thirteen Days" (2000 New Line Cinema) Kevin Costner, Bruce Greenwood, Steven Culp, Dylan Baker, Stephanie Romanov, Shawn Driscoll, Lucinda Jenney. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Showtime/Anytime.
  • Based on the 1997 book “The Kennedy Tapes: Inside the White House During the Cuban Missile Crisis,” this film will remind you why it is imperative to have a president who is intellectually engaged, well educated and a person who will put country before politics. Those were the days. “Thirteen Days” is a must-see for anyone heading into a voting booth.

MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OCTOBER 2020
In October of 2020, you may have been feeling entirely out of "whack" from months of pandemic chaos? You were not alone. For accurate information on how to help stop the spread of Coronavirus, go HERE. Since most of you will be home for Halloween, here are four chilling film suggestions to go with your caramel apples! Check out our October FUN IDEA. Enjoy!

“It Chapter Two"  (2019 KatzSmith Productions) Jessica Chastain, James, McAvoy, Isaiah Mustafa, Bill Hader, Jay Ryan, James Ransone, Andy Bean, Bill Skarsgård, Sophia Lillis, Jaeden Martell, Chosen Jacobs, Finn Wolfhard, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on HBO Max.
  • Last October, we recommended you watch "It Chapter One." As chapter two is now available for streaming, we felt obligated to add it to this year's Halloween recommendations. This all-star cast finale to Stephen King's epic horror story includes scenes that are sure to have you jumping out of your seats! The film also includes a cameo appearance from Stephen King himself! While we enjoyed both films, we strongly urge you to READ THE BOOK!

“The Omen"  (1976 Twentieth Century Fox) Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Harvey Stephens, Millie Whitelaw, Patrick Troughton, Martin Benson, Tommy Duggan. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Starz.
  • This is the version that made your parents scream.  In 1977 the world was introduced to a wide-eyed child named Damien. He seemed pretty innocent...until people start dying and general evilness ensues.  Starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, director Richard Donner's pacing and masterful use of angles yielded one of the best supernatural thrillers ever made. The original Omen is a must-watch for horror fans and aspiring filmmakers.  Just remember to leave the light on. Note, in October of 2018, we recommended the 2006 remake, which we enjoyed. You can find that version in our "REMAKES WE LIKE" category.

“The Mothman Prophecies"  (2002 Lakeshore Entertainment) Richard Gere, Debra Messing, Laura Linney, Will Patton, Lucinda Jenney, Rohn Thomas, Bill Laing, Murphy Dunne. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • Based on John Keel's 1975 Novel of the same name, this "supernatural-mystery" is more suspenseful than scary, but we love it! "The Mothman Prophecies" is a film that will have you thinking about strange occurrences for days after viewing. If you're not looking for something that will terrify you, but want something with just enough "scary-odd," watch this film—excellent performances by Richard Gere and Laura Linney.

“30 Days Of Night"  (2007 Columbia Pictures) Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, Danny Huston, Amber Sainsbury, Ben Foster, Mark Rendall, Manu Bennett, Mark Boone Junior, Megan Franich, Craig Hall. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • We love anything with Vampires, and this is one of our absolute favorite vampire films. We love it more for the concept than the film itself. Based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, the story takes us to Barrow, Alaska. Barrow, located in the Arctic Circle, is plunged into darkness each winter for 30 days due to its far north location. As we know, Vampires love the dark, so you can guess what's going to happen. If you're looking for a Halloween blood bath. Here it is!

MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SEPTEMBER 2020

“The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot"  (2018 Epic Pictures) Sam Eliot, Aidan Turner, Caitlin FitzGerald, Larry Miller, Ron Livingston, Rizwan Manji, Mark Steger. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Hulu.
  • We know what you're thinking, "are you kidding me with a title like that?" No, we're not! This film, while slow-paced, is excellent! You'll be surprised, and left wondering, "what's in the box?" "Calvin Barr" is our new favorite role for Sam Eliot! That's all we're going to say about that.

“Ex Mechina"  (2014 A24) Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Alicia Vikander, Sonoya Mizuno, Gana Bayarsaikhan, Corey Johnson. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Showtime.
  • This hidden gem from 2014 was filmed on a low budget to maintain production and story integrity. The masterful visual effects created for the female humanoid robot, "Ava", played wonderfully by Alicia Vikander, earned a 2015 Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Ex Mechina also earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for writer/director Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine.) Ex Mechina is a slow-paced yet brilliant psychological thriller, a must-see for any true Si-Fi fan!

“Jurassic Park"  (1993 Universal Pictures) Sam Neill, Laura Der, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Ariana Richards, Joseph Mazzello, Samuel L. Jackson, Wayne Knight, Bob Peck, Martin Ferrero. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Netflix.
  • We're confident that most of you have seen this film. Many argue that this 1993 classic was the birth of modern CGI. If you're old enough to remember seeing this film in the theater for the first time, the classic scene when the dinosaurs are first revealed may have left you stunned in your seat. Based on the Michale Crichton novel of the same name, this Spielberg directed masterpiece spawned four sequels, and a fifth, "Jurassic World: Dominion," is expected in 2021. Jurassic Park remains the best of the bunch, in our opinion. We also strongly encourage you to read the book, as it is, also in our opinion, much better than the film.

“Edge of Tomorrow"  (2014 Warner Bros.) Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Brendon Gleeson, Bill Paxton, Noah Tayler, Jonas Armstrong, Tony Way, Charlotte Riley, Kick Gurry, Franz Drameh, Dragomir Mrsic, Masayoshi Haneda. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • Marketed as "Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow," the film is an unexpected treat! If you're looking for a Sci-Fi film full of action, with a plot akin to "Groundhog's Day," look no further! Adapted from the 2004 Japanese light novel "All you Need Is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, "Edge of Tomorrow" is the perfect mix of Sci-Fi and action. Emily Blunt shines as "Sergeant Rita Vrataski. Quite possibly the best female Sci-Fi lead since Sigourney Weaver's "Ripley." in the Alien films. Add Edge of Tomorrow to your list today!

MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AUGUST 2020
Happy August, or "phone it in" month, as we call it. Sadly, here in The United States, it's still an infected hot zone. So remember PLEASE wear your masks when inside stores or in large crowds. Social distance, be smart. This virus doesn't care about your freedom, or who you vote for. This virus only wants to enter through your nose or mouth, and then USE YOU to spread itself to other people by exiting through your nose or mouth. WEARING FACE MASKS SAVES LIVES! IF NOT FOR YOURSELF, DO IT FOR YOUR FAMILY, DO IT FOR YOUR COUNTRY! Here are four random movie suggestions for August. Enjoy.

“Devil's Advocate"  (1997 Warner Bros.) Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, Craig T. Nelson, Tamara Tunie, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Judith Ivey, Jeffrey Jones. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Netflix.
  • Based on Andrew Neiderman's 1990 novel of the same name, "The Devil's Advocate" is an excellent supernatural thriller. Think of it as "The Omen" meets "The Firm." If you're looking for something that won't quite scare your pants off, but certainly put you on the edge of your seat, this film should do it.

  • We love this film. "RED" is action and comedy at it's best! We also love the 2013 Sequel "RED 2" and have been hoping and praying for the third installment of this excellent action-comedy series. Bruce Willis and cast are all excellent; the action sequences are over the top fun! Watch RED; you'll love it!

“Drive"  (2011 FilmDistrict) Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, Albert Brooks, Oscar Isaac, Ron Perlman, Russ Tamblyn. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on Netflix.
  • Known only as "Driver," Ryan Gosling shines in this art house action-drama about a man with many jobs, including "getaway driver." A 2011 hidden gem with a screenplay by Hossein Amini (Snow White and the Huntsman, 47 Ronin) based on the 2005 novel by James Sallis, Drive received an Oscar nomination in 2012 for best sound editing and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Albert Brooks. If you've never seen "Drive," you'll be surprised.

“Ford v Ferrari"  (2019 Twentieth Century Fox) Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Jon Bernthal, Caitriona Balfe, Noah Jupe, Josh Lucas, Tracy Letts. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on HBO MAX.
  • Winner of two Oscars (and nominated for four) this film is based on the real-life events of the development of the Ford GT40 race car. Featuring exquisitely shot race sequences, Ford v Ferrari also captures 1966's famed Le Mans race (24 hours) in France. We feel strongly that Christian Bale deserved an Oscar nod for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ken Miles (Bale did receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor). Mark it down:  Ford v Ferrari is not to be missed!

“Jaws"  (1975 Universal Pictures). Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfus, Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple iTunes Store. Also currently available on HBO GO/NOW.
  • Jaws is the best shark movie ever made. Period. Based on Peter Benchley’s novel of the same name and directed by Steven Spielberg, some argue that Jaws is the film that created the concept of the “Summer Blockbuster.” In the summer of 1975 and for years afterward, people were afraid to go back in the water! Nominated for four Oscars in 1976, including Best Picture and winning three: Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score, Jaws is a classic film that can be watched repeatedly. Brilliant performances by Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider, and Richard Dreyfuss.

“Deep Blue Sea" (1999 Warner Bros.) Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows, Samuel L. Jackson, LL Cool J, Jacqueline McKenzie, Michael Rapaport. Available on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • Ok if you’ve never seen “Deep Blue Sea,” we know what you might be thinking when you read the film synopsis, which is probably “Naaa…that’s just crazy!” But trust us, if you’ve never seen this film, and you’re looking for a wild and scary ride, Deep Blue Sea is the film for you! We love LL Cool J as the chef! He teaches us how to make the perfect omelet! You’ll thank us for this!

  • Many argue that The Shallows is a better shark film than Jaws. To that, of course, we say blasphemy! We will admit that The Shallows is probably the greatest shark film SINCE Jaws. Packed with suspense and featuring a strong performance by Blake Lively, this film is not for the squeamish. If you’re looking for a shark film that will have you on the edge of your seat and covering your eyes often, The Shallows is for you!
Picture
“Sharknado" (2012 Southward Films) Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, John Heard, Cassandra Scerbo, Jason Simmons, Alex Arleo, Sumiko Braun. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • It was a formula made in schlock movie heaven:  sharks + tornado = Sharknado!  This is the original film that started the great, crazy and seemingly endless series of “Sharknado” summers. We’re proud to say we’ve seen them all and the first is still the best. Starring Tara Reid and Ian Ziering, this made-for-television movie is part disaster, part horror, part science fiction, part comedy and ALL FUN!  Make time to catch this ultimate summer cult flick.  While it doesn't give Jaws a run for its money, you'll find yourself agreeing with critics who dubbed Sharknado “so bad it”s good!”

Directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Yesterday), Slumdog Millionaire earned 8 Oscar wins in 2009, including Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Directing. A hidden gem of a romcom, Imagine Me & You follows the story of Rachel (Piper Perabo), who discovers her true love “Luce” (Lena Headey) while planning her wedding to “Heck” Matthew Goode. • Many music fans may shy away from this film as they feel it's blasphemy to mess with the music of the greatest band of all time. We're here to tell you, don't be afraid. "Yesterday" is a beautiful film that will make you appreciate the music of the Beatles more than ever! The film imagines a world in which everyone, save a select handful of people, forgets the existence of The Beatles and their music. Ed Sheeran gives an excellent cameo appearance as himself. The thing that sells it for us is a very touching segment towards the end of the film. We won't spoil it; you'll have to watch for yourself. Trust us on this; you'll be glad you did.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" (2019 Columbia Pictures) Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Emile Hirsch, Julia Butters, Margaret Qualley, Al Pacino, Kurt Russell and many more. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are two of the greatest actors of their generation. We've always felt that Brad Pitt's talent was hugely underrated, not anymore; he won an Oscar for "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" for his performance in this film. We also feel that "Once upon a time in Hollywood" is Quentin Tarantino's best work to date. If you're a millennial and you've never seen a Tarantino film before, "Once upon a time in Hollywood" is an excellent choice to start

“1917" (2019 DreamWorks) Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay, Daniel Mays, Colin Firth Claire Duburcq, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • This cinematographic masterpiece is directed and co-written by Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead, Skyfall,) the plot is based partly on a story told to Mendes by his grandfather. "1917," tells the tale of two British soldiers assigned the mission of delivering an urgent message to call off an attack and save the lives of over one thousand British troops. Their journey across "no man's land" and behind enemy lines was filmed in two long takes, which gives the appearance of a continuous shot from start to finish. Cinematographer Rodger Deakins won his second Oscar for "Best Achievement in Cinematography" for his work on this film. If you haven't seen "1917" yet, add it to your list today!

“Joker" (2019 Warner Bros.) Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Lances Conroy, Brett Cullen. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • We grew up reading the Dark Knight comic books. If you're not a fan of the Batman comic books and have only seen the various films, what you should know is that the story of "The Joker" is actually a tragedy. We have seen no other portrayal of the Joker's character that has captured that tragedy until now. This film makes minimal reference to the Batman character. Instead, it points out a view from the other side, an interesting vision of "Thomas Wayne" (Bruce Wayne's father.) We knew Joaquin Phoenix would win the Oscar as soon as we finished watching this film. "Joker" is brutal and violent at times, and for some, it may be hard to watch. Still, it's a brilliant film which, for true Dark Knight fans, should not be missed.

“Transcendence" (2004 Alcon Entertainment) Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy, Kate Mara, Clifton Collins Jr.
Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • If you're a Star Trek fan, you may think of this plot-line as a possible scenario for the evolution of "The Borg." If you're not a Star Trek fan, you may find it to be an interesting take on where and where not to take technology! We enjoyed it.

“Mission to Mars" (2000 Touchstone Pictures) Gary Sinise, Tim Robbins, Connie Nielsen, Don Cheadle, Jerry O'Connell. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • Mission to Mars is an underrated film from 2000. We feel that it's a decent attempt at how an actual "not too distant future" mission to Mars may look. Sure there's some severe Sci-Fi speculation involving ancient aliens, but we'll overlook that. We'll do so because this film is full of technological suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Enjoy.

“Dark City" (1998 New Line Cinema) Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Jennifer Connelly, Kiefer Sutherland, Ian Richarson, Richard O'Brien, Bruce Spence, Melissa George. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple iTunes Store.
  • This is a great film which was mostly overlooked back in 1998. Think of it as "Hellraiser" meets "Westworld." It was innovative for its time using many of the same effects that made "The Matrix" (1999) famous. You'll want to watch it with the lights down low because it does live up to its name.

Picture
“Sunshine" (2007 DNA Films) Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, Cliff Curtis, Michelle Yeoh, Hiroyuki Sanada, Chris Evens, Benedict Wong. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple iTunes Store.
  • Ok, we admit that the premise is a bit silly, the sun is dying, and a crew from Earth must reignite it using an atom bomb. However, you will be surprised by this film. Directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Slumdog Millionaire) and written by Alex Garland (The Beach), this is a fun film to watch. We strongly encourage you to do so.

In March we gave you four films to twist your noggin!  We also suggested a great St. Patrick's day dish for you on our March FUN IDEA Page. Enjoy!

“Inception" (2010 Warner Bros.) Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Dileep Rao, Tom Berenger, Marion Ctillard, Micael Caine. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • Inception is a brilliant film, written and directed by Christopher Nolan (Memento, Dunkirk, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises.) The film earned eight Oscar Nominations and four Oscar wins in 2011 (Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Cinematography.)  It's a film that deals with the concept of lucid dreaming.  If you've never seen Inception, we recommend you go in cold, knowing as little about the plot as you can.  It's a masterfully filmed thrill-ride, which is certain to leave you wondering what was real and what wasn't. Inception tops our list for films that make you go "hmmmm?"

“Memento" (2000 Newmarket Capital Group) Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, Mark Boone Junior, Jorja Fox. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • In case you haven't noticed, we love Christopher Nolan films.  Memento was written and directed by Christopher Nolan based on a concept and story created by his brother Jonathan Nolan (HBO's Westworld, CBS's Person of Interest.) The film stars Guy Pearce as a man suffering from a rare form of amnesia who is desperately trying to solve the mystery of who attacked him and murdered his wife.  In 2017 Memento was added to the US Library of Congress National Film Registry.  Memento is an intriguing story that you'll want to watch twice!

“Fight Club" (1999 Twentieth Century Fox) Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • You can't talk about films that twist your noggin without mentioning "Fight Club." Most of you have probably seen it, yet you may not have known that it's based on an excellent book of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk. If you're a millennial and you spend most of your day "YouTubing," "Tik Toking," or "Instagramming," chances are you haven't seen Fight Club.  If this is the case, we strongly recommend you put your phone away — far away, sit down and watch this movie! Fight Club is a real "Hitchcock" style mind-bender, you should watch it immediately! If you are a millennial, you should probably learn about Alfred Hitchcock as well.  You're welcome!

“Life of Pi" (2012 Fox 2000 Pictures) Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Ayush Tandon, Tabu, Rafe Spall, Gérard Epardieu, James Saito, Jun Naito. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • Based on the 2001 novel of the same name by Yann Martel, "Life of Pi" is a cinematographic masterpiece. In 2013 the film received 11 total Oscar nominations and won four (Best Director for Ang Lee, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Visual Effects.) Both the novel and film are excellent; we encourage you to read the book before watching the movie. We won't give away spoilers; all you need to know is that the story is an extended metaphor which tells a remarkable tale of survival.

MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FEBRUARY 2020
In February, we decided to give you four completely random film recommendations.  The funny thing is, in our random selection, three of the four are films from 2009. We didn't plan that, it just happened, crazy right?  Get your popcorn, curl up under the snuggy and settle in for some great films.  Also, be sure to check out our February FUN IDEA.

“The Invention of Lying” (2009 Warner Bros.) Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Louis C.K. Jeffrey Tambor, Tina Fey, Rob Lowe. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • We’ve said it before, and we’ll repeat it; we love Rickie Gervais! We think he might be one of the smartest people in show business, certainly in the top 5. Here’s the set up: imagine a world where everyone has to tell the truth at all times. Now imagine that one man suddenly discovers he can lie while nobody else can. That’s all you need to know. This film is absolutely hilarious. Trust us. You’ll laugh out loud.

“Julie & Julia” (2009 Columbia Pictures) Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci, Chris Messina, Jane Lynch, Linda Emond, Mary Lynn Rajskub.  Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Also currently available on STARZ.
  • This film is fun. Written and directed by Nora Ephron (Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally) and based on two books: My Life in France, Julia Child’s autobiography by Julia Child and Alex Prud’homme, and Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, by Julie Powell. The film dances back and forth between past and present with glimpses of Julia Child’s life in Paris and Julie Powell’s life as an up and coming blogger, writer, and aspiring chef. An excellent film that will make you hungry for anything cooked with butter!

“Up In The Air” (2009 Paramount Pictures) George Clooney, Anna Kendrick, Vera Farmiga, Jason Bateman, J.K. Simmons, Danny McBride, Amy Morton, and Sam Elliott. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
  • George Clooney says he’s retired from acting. Sure. Anyhow, if you’re looking for a Clooney film which you might have missed, “Up In The Air” is a great choice. Based on Walter Kirn’s 2001 novel of the same name, “Up In The Air” received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture in 2010. The film examines the life of a “termination assistance” professional Ryan Bingham (Clooney). Excellent performances from Clooney, Vera Farmiga, and Anna Kendrick.

“Get Him to The Greek” (2010 Universal Pictures) Russel Brand, Jonah Hill, Sean Combs, Elisabeth Moss, Rose Byrne, Colm Meaney. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • There’s a lot to love about “Get Him to The Greek.” For starters, it’s wholly inappropriate! If you like movies similar to “The Hangover,” then this is for you — tremendously funny performances from Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, and Sean Combs. We also love the original songs which you can find on our MUSIC FROM THE MOVIES page. “Furry Walls” is our favorite.

MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR JANUARY 2020
Happy New Year! Maybe you noticed our name changed (see above.) Apparently, there are rules that finally caught up with us. We still think of ourselves as huflixPrime. All the same, welcome to "WhoFlicksPryme" Well, here we are, the start of a new decade.  This month we decided to bring you four of what we consider "classic" films.  True, many may disagree with our evaluations, but we're pretty sure those who do are not looking at this site, so who cares what they think? Not us! Also, check out our January FUN IDEA.

Picture
"The French Connection" (1971 Twentieth Century Fox) Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider, Tony Lo Bianco, Bill Hickman, Ann Rebbot, Harold Gary, Arlene Farber, Benny Marino. Available on Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • Based on the 1969 non-fiction book of the same name, “The French Connection” won 5 Oscars in 1972, including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role for Gene Hackman, and Best Director for William Friedkin. Based on real characters who played critical roles in dismantling the notorious “French Connection” scheme in which heroin was smuggled from Turkey to France and then to North America, this film is a must-see classic.

“Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971 Wolper Pitcures Ltd.) Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, Peter Ostrum, Roy Kinnear, Julie Dawn Cole, Leonard Stone, Denise Nickerson, Nora Denney, Paris Themmen, Ursula Reit, Michael Mollner, Diana Sowle. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • Based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel, with a screenplay also written by Roald Dahl, the 1971 version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the version to watch! We were annoyed by the 2005 remake. As much as we like Johnny Depp, you don’t mess with a classic of this nature. As always, we encourage you to read the book with your children before seeing the film.

“Strictly Ballroom” (1992 Beyond Films) Paul Mercurio, Tara Morice, Bill Hunter, Pat Thomson, Gia Carides, Barry Otto, Peter Whitford, Sonia Kruger, John Hannan. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
  • We consider this one a “modern classic” as it was released after 1990. Even if you’re not a fan of “dancing,” you can’t help but fall in love with this film. It’s a witty drama-comedy which will leave you feeling happy. Trust us when we say you’ll love this film!

“Philadelphia” (1993 TriStar Pictures) Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Roberta Maxwell, Jason Robards, Joanne Woodward, Charles Glenn, Ron Vawter, Anna Deavere Smith, Karen Finley, Stephanie Roth Haberle. Available on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
  • Directed by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs), this 1993 film tells the story of Andy Beckett (Tom Hanks), a senior associate at Philadelphia’s largest law firm who is fired for hiding his homosexuality and status as an AIDS patient from his coworkers. While the film won Hanks an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading role and an Oscar for Bruce Springsteen for Best Original Song “Streets of Philadelphia,” it’s producers did face some controversy.  A lawsuit was filed against the writers and producers as the screenplay appeared to be based on interviews with actual persons whose family had been promised compensation for the use of their story. The case was settled, details of the settlement were not released.
