"Funny Farm" is a classic "Chevy Chase" comedy at its best. A bit of sarcasm mixed in with just the right amount of slapstick. Those of you who have decided to leave the big city for country life may find this film to be right on target. Or not. But watch it anyway, just for the laughs.

This movie is a CLASSIC! We refer to it as a "Surf Stopper" as in, you stop "channel surfing" when you come across it on TV. "Trading Places" is one of our all-time favorite Eddie Murphy films, and if you're a youngster (GEN-Y or GEN-Z), it may become one of yours. So, if you are a GEN-Y or GEN-Z, take time out of your busy schedule of canceling things and staring at your small screen to watch "Trading Places" today!

If you've ever been to an actual office Christmas Party where things may have gone "round the bend," hold on to your hats! "Office Christmas Party" is a hidden gem of a comedy. Its humor is in the same league as "The Hangover," so brace yourselves for some no-holds-barred comedy!

"Home Alone" (1990 Twentieth Century Fox) Macaulay Culkin, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, John Candy, Roberts Blossom, Angela Goethals, Larry Hankin, Michael C. Maronn. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

You might say we're phoning it in by suggesting "Home Alone" in December, but it truly is a modern Christmas classic. We feel that this first film is the only film in the franchise worth watching. They should never have made any sequels. They got it right the first time and should have left well enough alone!

If you're looking for a fun "People" film, which will also make you hungry for a big sandwich, "Chef" is for you. "Chef" is a surprisingly excellent feel-good movie. For music fans, this film also features a great cameo appearance by Gary Clark Jr.

"Julie & Julia" (2009 Columbia Pictures) Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci, Chris Messina, Linda Emond, Mary Lyn Rajskub, Jane Lynch, Joan Juliet Buck, Helen Carey, Casy Wilson, Andrew Garman. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on STARZ.

Written and directed by Nora Ephron (Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally, My Blue Heaven), This may be our favorite "Cooking" film ever. Ephron based her screenplay on Julia's Child's autobiography "My Life in France" and Julia Powell's book "Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen," melding the two works into a delightful film. If you haven't seen Julie & Julia, it's an excellent choice during Thanksgiving.

"Soul Food" (1997 Twentieth Century Fox) Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Michael Beach, Nia Long, Mekhi Phifer, Brandon Hammond, Jeffrey D. Sams, Gina Ravera, Irma P. Hall, Mel Jackson, Carl Wright. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on HBO Max.

Don't let the title fool you; it's not all about the food, "Soul Food" is a metaphor. However, there is plenty of mouth-watering food in this fantastic mid-nineties drama. The plot follows the interconnected lives of three sisters and reminds us that all families have good times and challenging times. The food scenes will make you hungry, so don't watch this on an empty stomach, or you'll be searching for "Soul Food near me" on Uber Eats.

"Like Water for Chocolate" (1992 Miramax) Lumi Cavazos, Marco Leonardi, Regina Torné, Yareli Arizmendi, Claudette Maillé, Ada Carrasco, Mario Iván Martínez, Pilar Aranda, Sandra Arau, Arcelia Ramírez. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on HBO Max.

Based on the novel of the same name by Laura Esquivel, this romantic drama is not to be missed. Nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 1993, "Like Water for Chocolate" became the highest-grossing foreign-language film in the united states at the time of its release. So, if you're looking for a good story with some great food along the way, here it is. Enjoy!

We typically reserve October for a "scare-fest" collection of films. However in October of 2021, we thought we'd give you four of our favorite films of the "Time-Travel" genre. "Long Weekend" (2021 Stage 6 Films) Finn Wittrock, Zoe Chao, Damon Wayans Jr., Steve Basilone, Casey Wilson, Carter Morgan, Jess Jacobs, Jennifer Irwin. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on STARZ.

Released in March of 2021, You may have missed "Long Weekend." No worries, it's available for streaming now. We were pleasantly surprised by this film. Yes, "Long Weekend" does come off more like a love story, but it has a unique time-travel twist. It's an excellent film for a rainy weekend afternoon. Give it a look; we think you'll enjoy it.

"Timecrimes" (2007 Karbo Vantas Entertainment) Karra Elejalde, Candela Fernández, Bárbara Goenaga, Nacho Vigalondo, Juan Inciarte. Actors. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

Written and directed by Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo, Timecrimes is a hidden gem of a time-travel film. Featuring the story of a man who finds himself stuck in a causality loop, Timecrimes is an exciting take on the genre. Check it out; we think you'll be surprised.

"12 Monkeys" (1995 Universal Pictures) Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, Christopher Plummer, Christopher Meloni, David Morse, Charles Techman, Jann Ellis. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

Directed by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame (also The Fisher King, Time Bandits, and Brazil,) 12 Monkeys is arguably one of the best time-travel films ever made. The film earned Brad Pitt an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1996. If you've never seen 12 Monkeys, check it out today!

"Planet of the Apes" (1968 Twentieth Century Fox) Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, Linda Harrison, Robert Gunner, Jeff Burton, James Whitmore, Lou Wagner, Buck Kartalian. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on HBO/Max

This is the original 1968 "Planet of the Apes" film based on a French novel "La Planéte des Singes by Pierre Boulle. The screenplay for this version was written by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone.) If you're a youngster, you've probably watched the recent reboots of this excellent sci-fi series. Of course, we like the remakes too, but you really must see the original film as it is a true classic.

"Pitch Black" (2000 USA Films) Vin Diesel, Radha Mitchell, Keith David, Rhiana Griffith, Cole Hauser, Lewis Fitz-Gerald, Claudia Black, Les Chantery. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on STARZ.

Pitch Black is the start of what we consider one of the best “Cult Sci-Fi Series” ever, “The Chronicles of Riddick.” While this first film is more “monster movie” than “space adventure,” it sets the stage for the films to come. So if you like suspense and futuristic fantasy universe action, start with “Pitch Black” and then watch the rest of The Chronicles of Riddick.

"Palm Springs" (2020 Limelight) Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, J.K. Simmons, Peter Gallagher, Meredith Hagner, Camila Mendes, Dale Dickey, Brian Duffy, Tyler Hoechlin, Jena Friedman. Available on Hulu and Apple TV.

Palm Springs may very well be one of the best films we’ve seen in the past five years. Seriously! Think of it as “Groundhog Day” on steroids. It’s not very often that you find a Sci-Fi rom-com, and “Palm Springs” fits the bill. Trust us on this; this film is seriously funny, seriously fun, and quite touching. You’re going to love it!

"Timeline" (2003 Paramount Pictures) Paul Walker, Gerard Butler, Frances O’Connor, Billy Connolly, David Thewlis, Neal McDonough, Anna Friel, Michael Sheen. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on STARZ.

Based on Michael Crichton’s book of the same name, we feel “Timeline” is an underrated Sci-Fi film. We certainly enjoyed the book and can strongly recommend that you read it first! While it isn’t necessary to read the book before seeing the film, we find it makes the film more enjoyable.

"A.I. Artificial Intelligence" (2001 Warner Bros.) Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law, Frances O’Connor, Sam Robards, Jake Thomas, William Hurt, Jack Angel. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on STARZ.

We love this film. Yes, it has been described as “longer than necessary” by some critics, but we feel it is as long as is necessary to tell the story. We think of it as live-action anime. The story has the feel of an epic anime journey. If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll understand. Fantastic performances from Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law.

"The Perfect Storm" (2000 Warner Bros.) George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, John C. Reilly, Diane Lane, Mary Elizabeth Masterntonio, William Fichtner, John Hawkes, Allen Payne, Karen Allen, Cherry Jones. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

A visually stunning film that details the tragic loss of the Andrea Gail fishing vessel and its crew during the "1991 Perfect Storm." Adapted from Sebastian Junger's 1997 best-selling non-fiction book "The Perfect Storm," this film version was nominated for two Oscars; Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. Strong performances from George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. We strongly recommend you read the book before seeing the film.

"On Golden Pond" (1981 Universal Pictures) Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, Doug McKeon, Jane Fonda, Dabney Coleman. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

On Golden Pond is our favorite 80's "fishing" film. Ernest Thompson adapted the screenplay from his play of the same name. This film marks Henry Fonda's final big-screen appearance, for which he earned an Oscar for Best Actor. The film is worth watching for the scenery alone, but you will enjoy strong performances from Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Doug McKeon. On Golden Pond is a modern classic that the whole family can enjoy.

"Grumpy Old Men" (1993 Warner Bros.) Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Ann-Margret, Burgess Meredith, Daryl Hannah, Ossie Davis, Kevin Pollak, Buck Henry, Christopher McDonald. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

Believe it or not, Grumpy Old Men is considered a "rom-com." We get that, but we think it is much more of a Comedy, period! Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau (The odd Couple) star with Ann-Margret in this hilarious buddy film which will have you rolling on the floor laughing.

"A River Runs Through It" (1992 Allied Filmmakers) Brad Pitt, Tom Skerritt, Craig Sheffer, Emily Lloyd, Brenda Blethyn, Edie McClurg, Stephen Shellen, Susan Traylor. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

If you're into fly fishing and you haven't seen "A River Runs Through It," why are you waiting? Perhaps you'd like to read the book first? That's fine; we think the book is better! Still, this is an excellent adaptation, heavy on the fishing, heavy on the drama. Directed and narrated by Robert Redford, A River Runs Through IT is well-filmed with stunning cinematography.

"Dances With Wolves" (1990 Orion Pictures) Kevin Costner, Mary McDonnell, Graham Greene, Rodney A. Grant, Robert Pastorelli, Flyod ‘Red Crow” Westerman, Tantoo Cardinal Charles Rocket. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

With a screenplay adapted from Michael Blake's 1988 Book, "Dances With Wolves" marks Kevin Costner's directorial debut. Costner won an Oscar for Best Director, and the film earned seven Oscars total, including Best Picture. We can't say enough about this fantastic film in a few short sentences, so we'll say this: if you've never seen it, watch it immediately.

"Selma" (2014 20th Century Fox) David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Oprah Winfrey, Jim France, Tom Wilkinson. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

This historical drama depicts the 1965 march for voting rights from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Nominated for four Oscars in 2014 and winning one: Best Original Song. With voting rights currently under attack in many states, now more than ever is the time to remember the struggles of those who fought for this fundamental right.

"Platoon" (1986 Orion Pictures) Charlie Sheen, William Dafoe, Tom Berenger, Keith David, Kevin Dillon, Forest Whitaker, Francesco Quinn, John C. McGinley and more. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

Written and directed by Oliver Stone, "Platoon" may be one of the most important portrayals of the American experience in the Vietnam war of 1955 to 1975. The screenplay is based on Stone's own experience in the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantryman in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. "Platoon" won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Stone.

"The Post" (2017 Twentieth Century Fox) Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Tracy Letts, Bruce Greenwood, Bradley Whitford, Matthew Rhys, Alison Brie. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

A brilliant depiction of the work by The Washington Post's journalists, editor, and owner in 1971 to report on and publish the Pentagon Papers. Steven Spielberg directs an all-star cast. Top of their game performances from Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. "The Post" is a must-see film for any future journalist.

In June, we thought we'd share some of our favorite "sequels" with you. We're giving you four "sequels," which we feel are excellent follow-ups to their predecessors. "RED 2" (2013 Summit Entertainment) Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren, Anthony Hopkins, Byung Hun Lee, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Brian Cox, Neal McDonough. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

We love this series of films. The cast is fantastic, and the plots have both been solid. The "RED" series is the perfect blend of action and comedy. If you've not seen "RED (2010) Start there, then watch "RED 2." We are desperately hoping that Hollywood will be able to pull this cast back together for one more film! Sadly, it appears that the "RED 3" project, announced way back in 2013, has been indefinitely "Shelved." We're very disappointed by this news.

"National Treasure: Book of Secrets" (2007 Walt Disney Pictures) Nicolas Cage, Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger, Harvey Keitel, Helen Mirren, Jon Voight, Ed Harris, Bruce Greenwood. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

This film is the follow-up to the 2004 blockbuster "National Treasure." "Book of Secrets" is an excellent sequel that brings back the original cast's primary stars with the additions of Helen Mirren, Ed Harris, and Bruce Greenwood. We love both films. While the first of the series, "National Treasure," is largely considered the best. "Book of Secrets" is a solid follow-up that brings the same action-packed pace of the first. Rumor of a third "National Treasure" film h as been hanging in the air since 2007. We pray that someone brings the series back before it's too late!

"Riddick" (2013 Universal Pictures) Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Mollá, Dave Bautista, Bokeem Woodbine, Conrad Pla, Danny Blanco Hall, Matt Nable, Raoul Max Trujillo. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

The "Riddick" films have developed their own "Cult" status since the first of the series "Pitch Black" was released way back in 2000. The good news a fourth film, "Riddick: Furya," was announced in 2017. We don't have any solid info on the current status of "Furya" other than a basic plot and that it is approaching pre-production. We're pretty sure that the COVID 19 Pandemic has delayed "Furya" a bit, but it has not stopped it. We'll be waiting!

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" (2011 Warner Bros.) Robert Downey Jr. Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Stephen Fry, Paul Anderson, Kelly Reilly, Geraldine James, Eddie Marson. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

This is the second film in what is sure to be a continued franchise. Again, if you haven't seen the first of the series "Sherlock Holmes (2009)," watch that first. We found the sequel to be just as good, if not better, than the first film. We have high hopes for the third film in the series, which is currently in pre-production and possibly expected by 2022.

Welcome to May! Slowly but surely, things are starting to look better. We're not out of the woods yet, so remember to stay safe and follow the rules for your area. Here in the States, later this month, we celebrate "Memorial Day." With that in mind, we're giving you four films to remind you of the efforts of those who have served in our nation's defense. Enjoy. "Saving Private Ryan" (1998 Dreamworks Pictures) Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Edward, Burns, Adam Goldberg, Barry Pepper, Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Jeremy Davies, Matt Damon, Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

Saving Private Ryan is arguably the best World War II film of the modern age. Winner of five Oscars, including “Best Director” for Steven Spielberg, this film has become a new American Classic. With a nearly all-star cast, and a story inspired by the Niland’ Brothers, Saving Private Ryan will have you glued to your seat from start to finish. Be warned, the film’s realistic portrayal of warfare may, at times be hard to watch for some viewers.

"Three Kings" (1999 Warner Bros.) George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, Spike Jonze, Nora Dunn, Cliff Curtis, Saïd Taghmaoui, Judy Greer, Mykelti Williamson. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on HBO Max.

If you’ve never seen Three Kings, you may be surprised by this film. We loved it. Considered a satirical dark comedy, Three Kings was a box office hit in the fall of 1999. Directed by David O. Russell (Spanking the Monkey, Silver Linings Playbook) Three Kings should not be missed.

"Greyhound" (2020 Sony Pictures Entertainment) Tom Hanks, Elisabeth Shue, Stephen Graham, Matt Helm, Craig Tate, Rob Morgan, Travis Quentin, Jeff Burkes, Matthew Zuk, One James Corlett. Available on Apple TV.

Greyhound, which is available on Apple TV+ is a film that makes the Apple TV+ subscription worth the cost! This spectacular story, based on C. S. Forester’s 1955 novel “The Good Shepherd” follows the crew and commander of an American destroyer as it takes part in escorting a convoy of Allied troop and supply transports across the Atlantic to Liverpool England during World War II. The action starts early and doesn’t let up until the end of the film.

"Midway" (2019 Summit Entertainment) Ed Skrein, Woody Harrelson, Patrick Wilson, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Luke Evans, Etsushi Toyokawa, Tadanobu Asano, Aaron Eckhart, Keean Johnson, Jake Weber. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on HBO Max.

While this is not the first film version of the Battle of Midway, it may be the best. With stunning arial battles that make Star Wars look silly, this newest adaptation of Midway is absolutely thrilling. Covering the major historic events of the early Pacific front during World War II, Midway will have history buffs well satisfied.

While this is not the first film version of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel, it may be the best. It should be noted that BBC/Masterpiece/PBS aired a 3 part mini-series in 2018, which is also excellent. For those of you who may not have read the classic novel, in a nutshell, "Little Women" tells the story of four sisters growing up in New England during the American Civil War. We strongly recommend that you READ THE BOOK.

"500 Days of Summer" (2009 Fox Searchlight Pictures) Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Chloë Grace Moretz, Geoffrey Arend, Matthew Gray Gubler, Rachel Boston, Patricia Belcher, Clark Gregg. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on STARZ.

Are you looking for a bit of romance? You won't find it here. Instead, you will find a fantastic love story that tells it like it is. Does true love exist? That's the question. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel shine in this fantastic "not-so" love story.

"Open Range" (2003 Touchstone Pictures) Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, Annette Bening, Michael Gambon, Michael Jeter, Diego Luna, Dean McDermott, Abraham Benrubi, James Russo. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

Are you looking for a western? Here's one we think you'll love. A hidden gem from 2003, produced and directed by Kevin Costner. The screenplay by Craig Storper is based on Lauran Paine's 1990 novel "The Open Range Men." With brilliant performances from Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, and Annette Bening, we think you'll enjoy this film!

"Harold and Maude" (1971 Paramount Pictures) Ruth Gordon, Bud Cort, Vivian Pickles, Cyril Cusack, Charles Tyner, Ellen Geer, Tom Skerritt, Susan Madigan, G. Wood. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

Harold and Maude is an absolute "must-see" film. Considered a dark comedy, we think of it as more of an oddly romantic coming of age story. While critics were not overly impressed with Harold and Maude at the time of its release, viewers disagreed; the film has become an American classic. We’re so glad that this film is finally available for streaming! The Commitments is, in our opinion, one of the greatest films of the early 1990s. If you're a musician who has ever been in a band, you'll love this story. It's a hilarious and tragic tale of the rise and fall of an excellent local band! Trust us; you're going to love this film!

Would you believe an Irish horror film? Believe it! But it's also a comedy of sorts. We don't want to give too much away, but we suggest you view this film when you're in a drinking mood. Or not. There's only one way to fight off Aliens! Get pissed!

We know, not everyone loves a rom-com. But honestly, this one is cute. Is the concept cheesy? Yes. Still, Amy Adams proves that she can take on the cheesy rom-com and make it work. The good news is, if you do like rom-coms, Leap year is one of the better ones. Lovely Irish countryside scenes. Enjoy!

Based on Frank McCourt's autobiography, Angela's Ashes follows McCourt's life from child to adult as his family is forced to move back to Ireland from New York in the mid-1930s. While the film is excellent, we strongly recommend reading the book as it is a brilliant autobiography.

Based on the Novel of the same name by Kathryn Stockett, "The Help" explores African Americans' working conditions while working for wealthy white families in the American South during the 1960s. Sure, you've probably seen "Coming to America" at least once or twice. We're telling you there's no better time to watch it again than now because "Coming to America 2" will hit the big and small screens next month! If you've never seen it, sit back and get ready to enjoy the hilarious adventures of Prince Akeem Joffer (Eddie Murphy) of Zamunda as he looks for Love in New York City. Coming to America is a true modern classic!

This film is an excellent biopic of the early career of Thurgood Marshall, who would become the first African-American supreme court justice. The film focuses on the 1940 case of the State of Connecticut v. Joseph Spell. Chadwick Boseman gives a stellar performance in the role of Thurgood Marshall. “Marshall” is a must-see for any aspiring legal students.

"Fences" (2016 BRON Studios) Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson. Available on Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.

Adapted from August Wilson's 1985 play and produced, directed by and starring Denzel Washington, this screen version of Fences earned four Oscar nominations and one win in 2017 (Best Supporting Actress for Viola Davis.) The story follows Troy Maxson's life (Denzel Washington) and his family in Pittsburgh in the 1950s. Washington received a nomination for Best Actor for the role of Troy Wilson. Some critics contend that this is Denzel Washington's best work.

This hidden gem from 2011 features a nearly all-star cast, including an early film appearance from Rami Malek (2019 Oscar Winner for Best Actor, Bohemian Rhapsody). Centered around the 2008 financial crisis's human cost, Larry Crowne tells an uplifting tale of personal reinvention and the ability to start fresh. We think you'll love it, just as we did.

Jason Schwarzman shines as "Max Fischer," a quirky yet charismatic high school student who's strengths lie in extracurricular activities. Written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, and directed by Anderson, Rushmore is one of our favorite Wes Anderson films.

Written and directed by Jon Favreau, "Chef" will make you hungry! After a notable chef publicly lambasts a well-known food critic, his life becomes a cross country mission of reinvention and reconnection. Jon Favreau trained with Chef Roy Choi, founder of Kogi Korean BBQ and the Kogi-Food Truck empire while preparing for this film. Trust us, if you haven't seen "Chef," you're in for a treat!

"The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" (2019 BBC Films) Chiwetel Ejiofor, Maxwell Simba, Felix Lemburo, Robert Agengo, Lily Banda, Aïssa Maïga, Fredrick Lukhere, Hestignzi Phiri. Available on Netflix.

"The Boy who Harnessed the Wind" is a fantastic film based on the true story of a young boy whose hard work and perseverance lead him to save a farming community from the scourge of drought. Actor, writer, dictator Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Children of Men, The Martian) makes his directorial debut with this film, which won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.
