MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DECEMBER 2022
Welcome to December! Well, We made it through another year. We hope your 2022 was a good one.  If it not, no worries, just sit back, relax and enjoy one of these four random film selections. We'll see you again in 2023! Enjoy!  For accurate information on how to help stop the spread of Coronavirus, go HERE.

"The French Dispatch" (2021) Benicio Del Toro, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Jeffrey Wright, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, Liev Schreiber, Willem Dafoe, Edward Norton, Elizabeth Moss, Fisher Stevens, Jason Schwartzman, and more. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on Hulu.
  • The French Dispatch may have just moved into the number one spot on our favorite Wes Anderson films list. As with all of Anderson's films, The French Dispatch features a near-all-star cast with most of the "Anderson Players" (as we call them.) returning for new roles. So if you're a fan of Wes Anderson's films, you'll love this one too.

"Blazing Saddles" (1974 Warner Bros.) Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Harvey Korman, Madeline Kahn, Slim Pickens, Mel Brooks, John Hillerman, Burton Gilliam, Alex Karras, David Huddleston. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on Hulu.
  • Quick! Watch this movie before the younger generation cancels it! The irony is that it's an "anti-racist" comedy, but sadly that might be lost on the "woke" set. Look, we get it. It's no secret that we're socially liberal here at "WhoFlicksPryme," but we also understand that your past is your past; you can't hide it in the closet or give it a new coat of paint. You must accept and embrace it. Your past allows you to recognize that you've improved as a society (hopefully.) So enjoy Blazing Saddles and consider it a film for its time.

"Top Gun: Maverick" (2022 Paramount Pictures) Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Bashir Salahuddin, Charles Parnell, Ed Harris, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on Paramount Plus.
  • Ok, we were around when the original Top Gun was a huge hit back in 1986 during the cold war. Sure, we did love it back then because we were in our teens, and that stuff was AWESOME! That being said, this new film is a near-perfect sequel. We will admit that the fantastical final sequence was a bit of a stretch, but the film's action and flight sequences are so COOL that you can let the ending slide. Also, we've always held the opinion that Tom Cruise is one of the greatest actors of his generation period. (We'll cite "A Few Good Men," "Jerry Maguire," and "Risky Business" as examples.)

"Spirited" (2022 Apple TV+) Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, Octavia Spencer, Patrick Page, Sunita Mani, Loren G. Woods, Tracy Morgan, Marlow Barkley, Andre Anders, Rose Byrne. Available on Apple TV.
  • Apple has done it again! We're still very impressed by Apple's ability to jump into entertainment and produce hit after hit! Whatever money they dumped into that effort was well spent! Spirited is yet another take on Charles Dickens's classic "A Christmas Carol." While there have been many, "Spirited" pokes fun at that fact and slides itself into the mix with the correct dose of drama, song, dance, and of course, comedy! Will Farrell and Ryan Reynolds are a perfect comedy duo. We're not sure if it was Apple's intention, but the film seems to set itself up for possible future "Christmas" sequels. We hope we're right! We'd watch one of these every Christmas!

MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NOVEMBER 2022
Welcome to November! You might be wondering where we've been. Well, clearly, we've been slacking! Not really. We've just been busy working our day jobs. We apologize to all three of you! Anyhow, we hope everyone in the US had a great Thanksgiving. Here are four movies you might have enjoyed in November. Enjoy. For accurate information on how to help stop the spread of Coronavirus, go HERE.

"Bullet Train" (2022 Columbia Pictures) Brad Pitt, Joey King, Brian Tyree Henry, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Andrew Koji, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon, Sandra Bullock, Masi Oka. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on Netflix.
  • We loved this film! Are you looking for a crime-drama-action comedy? (yeah, it's a mouthful) Well, look no further! "Bullet Train" is now Brad Pitt's best role ever! (We think!) The entire cast is excellent. Think of it as "Runaway Train meets Midnight Run." Bullet Train will have you laughing and on the edge of your seat the entire time! Enjoy.

"Tootsie" (1982 Columbia Pictures) Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange, Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Bill Murray, Gene Davis, Doris Belack, Sydney Pollack, George Gaynes. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on Hulu.
  • This 1982 classic directed by Sydney Pollack was nominated for 10 Oscars and had one win (Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Jessica Lange.) Tootsie has stood the test of time so well that it's now viewable as a period piece capturing the early 1980s, as few other films have. So, if you're of the younger generations, put your preconceived notions of parents' or grandparents' age aside and enjoy the dramedy!

"Notting Hill" (1999 Universal Pictures) Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant, Rhys Ifans, Richard McCabe, Gina McKee, Emma Chambers, James Dreyfus, Tim McInnerny, Hugh Bonneville. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on Netflix.
  • We don't often give romcoms their due, and we should watch a few more of them from time to time. Statistics show (somewhere) that romcoms are some of Hollywood's most popular offerings. We love Notting Hill because it's just pure fantasy — a regular guy meets a famous movie star, and romance ensues. (It could happen? Not!) This film has a great cast and is a great comedy. Enjoy.

"National Lampoon's Vacation" (1983 Warner Bros.) Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, Dana Barron, Randy Quaid, Imogene Coca, Eddie Bracken, Eugene Levey, John Candy. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on Netflix.
  • The vacation films may be lost on children of the 2000s onward, but they should be brought back. Chevy Chase can play the grandfather now… and hey, wait a minute…they did that with the 2015 Reboot! (Yes, the 2015 reboot is well-cast and hilarious) But we're here to praise the original, 1983's "National Lampoon's Vacation." This film spurred four sequels (including 2015's "Vacation" Reboot.) While we'd love to see more, we are currently unaware of any plans for future films in the "Vacation" franchise

Walsh, Anni Krueger, Ritz. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV. Also currently available on Showtime.
  • Are you looking for a good werewolf comedy? (Of course you are!) Well, here it is. Think of it as a werewolf “who done it?” film. The ending might surprise you. Enjoy.

  • Dead Calm isn’t so much a scare-fest film as a suspense-filled thriller. Dead Calm is a late 80s classic which will keep you on the edge of your seat.

“The Faculty” (1998 Dimension Films) Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Josh Hartnett, Selma Hayek, Shawn, Elijah Wood, Jon Stewart, Hatosy, Laura Harris, Famke Janssen, Piper Laurie, Christopher McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Robert Patrick. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV. Also currently available on HBOMAX.
  • Think of it as “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” but happening in your local high school. The Faculty is a well-made “teen angst” horror-suspense film from the late 90s. Enjoy.

“The Hitcher” (1986 HBO Pictures) Rutger Hauer, C. Thomas Howell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jeffery DeMunn, John M. Jackson, Billy Green Bush, Jack Thibeau, Armin Shimerman, Gene Davis, Jon Van Ness, Henry Darrow. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV. Also currently available on HBOMAX.
  • This version is the original 1986 HBO  film. We recommend the original over the 2007 remake. While the remake is good, it just can’t beat the suspense of the original movie. In one of his most remembered roles, the late Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Sin City, True Blood) will give you nightmares!

MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SEPTEMBER 2022
Welcome to Sci-Fi September 2022! Yes, Yes, we know we're late again. It's been a crazy month. Anyhow, you know the deal (or maybe you don't), but every September, we give you four sci-fi films. Hence "Sci-Fi" September. Enjoy! For accurate information on how to help stop the spread of Coronavirus, go HERE.

“Galaxy Quest” (1999 Dreamworks Pictures) Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Daryl Mitchell, Sam Rockwell, Enrico Colantoni, issei Pyle, Justin Long. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV.
  • We know that true Star Trek fans do not like to be poked fun at. Yes, Galaxy Quest does poke fun at Star Trek fans (in a way.) True fans, however, will understand that the effect has produced this excellent, modern classic all-star cast, sci-fi comedy. We feel the film's entire cast could show up on a panel at any Sci-Fi convention and would be welcomed with open arms.

“The Invasion” (2007 Warner Bros.) Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Jackson Bond, Jeffrey Wright, Jeremy Northam, Veronica Cartwright, Josef Sommer, Celia Weston, Roger Rees. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV.
  • "The Invasion is the second remake of the classic Sci-Fi 1956 film "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and is our personal favorite. This modern version updates the story to the near present day and is a good suspense ride from start to finish.

  • "Dune: Part One" (onscreen title) is technically a remake, although we consider it more as "the proper film version." If you're a film buff, you can watch the 1984 version, but if you're a fan of Frank Herbert's novel, skip the 84' version and watch "Dune 2021" (as it's become known.) They could not have made a better adaptation with this version; the effects are so real you'll think you're on another planet.

  • If you were living in a cave in 2009, you might have missed Avatar. If that's the case, watch this film immediately! We feel you should go into it blind with little or no information about the plot. All you need to know is that for many "Gen Z" members, this is their "Star Wars." Decide for yourself, but if you're a sci-fi fan, we think you'll love it!

“Napoleon Dynamite” (2004 Fox Searchlight Pictures) Jon Heder, Tina Majorino, Efren Ramirez, Jon Gries, Aaron Ruell, Diedrich Bader, Shondrella Avery, Sandy Martin, Haylie Duff. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV.  Also currently available on Hulu.
  • This hilarious film depicts the awkward high school days of Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder,) living in Preston, Idaho. An oddball-comedy, loosely based on the real-life experiences of co-writer Jared Hess (the film was co-written with his wife Jerusha Hess), has achieved “cult film” status. While this awkward comedy may not be for everyone, we love it. Enjoy.

"Blast from the Past" (1999 New Line Cinema) Brendan Fraser, Alicia Silverstone, Christopher Walken, Sissy Spacek, Joey Slotnick, and Dave Foley.  Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV. Also currently available on Hulu.
  • One of our all-time favorite roles for Brendan Fraser, we love this film! Blast from the Past is a surf-stopper whenever found on cable (which is rare).  A brilliant rom-com with an excellent cast.  Great supporting performances from Dave Foley, Christopher Walken, and Sissy Spacek. Trust us. You’ll laugh out loud!

“Blazing Saddles” (1974 Warner Bros.) Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Slim Pickens, Harvey Korman, Madeline Kahn, Mel Brooks, John Hillerman, David Huddleston, Carol Arthur, Alex Karras. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV.  Also currently available on Hulu.
  • Blazing Saddles is a classic Mel Brooks comedy which, if you’ve never seen, you should before the “cancel culture” mobs permanently banish it. We’re liberal but old-school liberal; we don’t like “cancel culture.” While it’s ok to “boycott” something you take issue with, you shouldn’t banish something outright. You can’t erase your history or give it a new coat of paint. Blazing Saddles was released in 1974; times were different then, and so was comedy. We’re not saying it’s a good or bad thing, simply the way it was at that time.

  • We may need to add this one to our “Top Nine Baseball Films” list (we’ll add it to the “Extra Innings” category). Great performances all around by Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, and Justin Timberlake. If you’re a baseball fan, you’ll enjoy this film.

  • Based on Kaui Hart Hemmings' 2007 novel "The Descendants," this film adaptation was a box office success in 2011, receiving five Oscar nominations and winning one for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film deals with strained family relationships, loss, and reconciliation—stellar performances from George Clooney and Shailene Woodley.

  • There are many great Rock N' Roll biopics; however, "Bohemian Rhapsody" stands alone as possibly the best to date. The film follows the fortunes of the band "Queen" with a focus on the life of lead singer Freddie Mercury, culminating with a fantastic recreation of the band's set during the 1985 Live Aid benefit concert at Wembley Stadium in London. Bohemian Rhapsody is a film that music fans of all generations can appreciate.

  • Wanted is an excellent action-thriller from 2008. If you're an action fan, trust us, this film has plenty of it. It's not very often that you come across an action film with a unique plot, including an unexpected twist. Wanted has both. Be advised that the film is violent and may be too intense for some viewers.

“Before I Fall” (2017 Awesomeness Films) Zoey Deutch, Elena Kampouris, Halston Sage, Cynthy Wu, Medallion Rahimi, Erica Tremblay, Logan Miller, Kian Lawley, Liv Hewson, Jennifer Beals, Nicholas Lea. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV.  Also currently available on Showtime Anytime.
  • Don't judge a film by its trailer! Based on the novel of the same name by Lauren Oliver, this teen angst-meets-Groundhog day drama is surprisingly well done. If you've always found high school clique girls annoying, fear not; the film is just long enough to make its point without forcing you to run for the exits. Lead actor Zoey Deutch (Zombieland: Double Tap, Flower, Buffaloed) gives a strong performance. If you're looking for a modern-day teen drama, it's worth the watch.

  • Forget what happened at the Oscars. "King Richard" may be one of the best sports biopics ever filmed. While it is true that Smith plays the role of his life, and tragic that his behavior at the Oscars destroyed that, "King Richard" is the story of Venus and Serena Williams and how their parents worked together to put them both on the path to greatness. • Directed by Tim Burton, nominated for one Oscar and five Golden Globes, “Big Fish” is, in our opinion, Tim Burton’s finest and most sophisticated work.  A magical film capturing a father explaining his mysterious life to his skeptical son through fantastic metaphorical stories. The underlying story is the tale of how an estranged son comes to peace and understanding with his father at the end of his life’s journey. We can’t watch this film without getting tears in our eyes at the end.  If you’ve not seen “Big Fish” treat yourself to it immediately, you’ll be glad you did.

  • "Juno" is what we consider a new modern classic. A touching story of a high school girl dealing with an unexpected pregnancy, looking to give her baby up for adoption to the right couple. A great comedy-drama with a nearly all-star cast, “Juno” should not be missed. Add it to your list immediately.

  • "Ruby Sparks" We feel that Paul Dano (12 Years a Slave, There will Be Blood, The Batman) is a tremendously underrated actor. "Cool Runnings" (1993 Walt Disney Pictures) Leon, Dough E. Doug, Rawle D. Lewis, Malik Yoba, John Candy. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
  • This early 90s sports comedy is based on the actual story of the first Jamaica National Bobsleigh Team, which competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Cool Runnings is John Candy's last screen appearance before his death in 1984. While not an entirely accurate account of the "Jamaican Bobsled Team's" story (some actual footage of the bobsled runs is included, both the footage and story were edited for dramatic effect), Cool Runnings is a fun and touching film. Enjoy this with the family to get yourselves psyched up for the 2022 Winter Olympics!

"Eddie the Eagle" (2015 Twentieth Century Fox) Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman, Jo Hartley, Keith Allen, Iris Berben, Tim McInnerny, Mark Benton. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
  • Loosely based on the life of Michael Edwards (Eddie the Eagle), the English Olympian who was the first British ski jumper to compete in a winter Olympics since 1928. In the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Edwards ranked 55 in the "Large Hill" ski jumping event. While Edwards didn't achieve great success in his sport, in the winter of 1988, he became a household name in Britain for his bravery and determination to compete. Eddie the Eagle is a fantastic, uplifting film to enjoy with the family.

"Miracle" (2004 Buena Vista Pictures) Kurt Russel, Patricia Clarkson, Noah Emmerich, Sean McCann, Kenneth Welsh, Michael Mantenuto, Eddie Cahill, Patrick O'Brien Dempsy, Nathan West. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
  • Based on the story of Herb Brooks, who coached the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, Miracle is one of the best modern-era sports films. Miracle highlights the events that led to the U.S. Olympic Men's hockey team's defeat of the Soviet Men's team in the first medal round of the 1980 Winter Olympics (The U.S. would go on to beat Finland in the final game to win Gold.)

"Drugstore Cowboy" (1989 Avenue Pictures) Matt Dillon, Kelly Lynch, Heather Grahm, James Le Gros, James Remar, Max Perlich, George Catalono. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
  • Based on the autobiographical novel by James Fogle, "Drugstore Cowboy" may be one of the best crime drama films of the late 80s early 90s. Brilliant performances by Matt Dillon (arguably his best role) and Kelly Lynch. This film is not for the squeamish as it deals with drug addiction; however, if you're looking for an excellent, suspenseful film, watch Drugstore Cowboy.

"The Usual Suspects" (1995 Gramercy Pictures) Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro. Kevin Pollak, Stephen Baldwin, Giancarlo Esposito, Chazz Palminteri, Pete Postlethwaite, Suzy Amis. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
  • Winner of two Oscars in 1996 (Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Kevin Spacey, Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, Christopher McQuarrie) The Usual Suspects is a modern classic. Quite possibly one of the best crime-drama films of all time. If you've never seen this film, immediately add it to your list!

"Friday" (1995 New Line Cinema) Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, Nia Long, John Witherspoon, Anna Maria Horsford, Faizon Love, Tom Lister Jr. Regina King, DJ Pooh. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on HBO Max.
  • "Friday" is the first film in the "Friday" franchise created by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh. While many feel that "Friday" is the best film of the trilogy, we have a hard time picking a favorite. We strongly recommend you watch all three and decide for yourself (Ok, we love "Next Friday" but we often change our minds.) All three films are hilarious, but you must start at the beginning, so enjoy "Friday" ASAP!

"Jackie Brown" (1997 Miramax) Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Foster, Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda, Micael Keaton, Chris Tucker, Michael Bowen. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Also currently available on HBO Max.
  • Quentin Tarantino adapted his screenplay from the crime novel "Rum Punch" by Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty, The Big Bounce Three-Ten to Yuma.) Many argue that "Jackie Brown" is Tarantino's best film, we love it, but "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is our current favorite. Still, if you're a fan of Tarantino films, Jackie Brown is a treat worth multiple viewings. We put it in our "Surf Stopper" category. Jackie Brown is a modern classic not to be missed with a nearly all-star cast, classic Tarantino dialog, and plenty of suspense. Enjoy!
