OUR TOP NINE FAVORITE BASEBALL FILMS
by  huflixPrime
Editors

We can all agree that there are many great baseball films. Here is a list of our top nine favorites.  Why nine and not ten?  We thought it would be nice to list one film for each player position.  The world is full of lists, and as we’ve mentioned in the past, the thing about "top lists" is that they are always subject to change.  New films are released all the time, and we don’t know when the next great baseball film may hit a home run on the big screen — and small screen.  Our list will change as our opinions do.
As always, if you disagree with our selections, feel free to email us on our CONTACT PAGE (although most people seem more comfortable trying to sell us “enhancement” products). For now, here it is, our “Top Nine Favorite Baseball Films” list. Enjoy!

NUMBER 9:  “The Sandlot” (1993 20th Century Fox), Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, Patrick Renna, Chauncey Leopardi, Marty York, Brandon Quintin Adams, Grant Gelt, Shane Obedzinski, Victor DiMattia, Karen Allen and Denis Leary. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple iTunes Store.
  • Kids love baseball, after all, they are the future of baseball! So we had to include a kid-friendly baseball film on the list.  Yes, we know what some of you are thinking, and that “pitcher’s got a big butt” film is a great choice too! However, “The Sandlot” is an excellent baseball film to be enjoyed by kids and adults alike! Be sure to check it out!

NUMBER 8: “Moneyball” (2011 Columbia Pictures),  Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman.  Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple iTunes Store.
  • Based on the 2003 non-fiction book "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game" by Michale Lewis, this film adaptation, written by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin is also excellent. Stand-out performances from Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. We strongly encourage you to READ THE BOOK which is excellent, and a must read for any baseball fan.

NUMBER 7: “42” (2013 Warner Bros.)  Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Nicole Beharie, Christopher Meloni, Andre Holland, Lucas Black, Hamish Linklater. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple iTunes Store.
  • "42" is not the first biopic of Jackie Robinson, but it is certainly the best to date in our opinion.  Highlighted by an excellent performance by Chadwick Boseman, we also feel that Harrison Ford should have earned a "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" Oscar nod that year for his portrayal of Branch Rickey. It is without a doubt one of his best roles.  42 is a must see for any baseball history buff.

NUMBER 6: “Eight Men Out” (1988 MGM), John Cusack, Charlie Sheen, D.B Sweeney, Michael Rooker, Christopher Lloyd, Don Harvey, John Mahoney and more. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple iTunes Store.
  • Adapted from the book "Eight Men Out: The Black Sox and the 1919 World Series" by Eliot Asinof, this 1988 classic, by indie film auteur John Sayles tells the story of the 1919 "Black Sox" Scandal. Baseball, our national pastime, and an original American sport, has a long and fascinating history.  "Eight Men Out" pulls back the curtain on one of Baseball's darkest chapters. Great performances by John Cusack and D.B. Sweeney.  For additional viewing be sure to check out Ken Burns "Baseball" (1994) and "Baseball: The Tenth Inning" (2010).

NUMBER 5:  "A League of Their Own" (1992 Columbia Pictures)  Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Jon Lovitz, David Strathairn, Bill Pullman, and Garry marshall. Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • "A League of Their Own" is certainly one of the best baseball movies of all time. This film gave us one of the most memorable lines in film history: "There's no crying in baseball!". Snubbed by the Academy in it's day (at least we think so), "A League of Their Own" did receive Golden Globe nominations for both "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical" for Geena Davis and "Best Original Song - Motion Picture" for Madonna and Shep Pettibone.  Penny Marshall though was overlooked for a Best Director nod. "A League of Their Own" is an all-time film favorite, a "Surf Stopper" whenever found on cable TV.

NUMBER 4: “For Love of the Game” (1999 Universal Studios)  Kevin Costner, Kelly Preston, John C. Reilly, Jena Malone, J.K. Simmons, Brian Cox. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple iTunes Store.
  • We debated putting this one closer to number one.  Kevin Costner is our "Patron Saint" of baseball films (he stars in three of the top four!) "For Love of the Game," based on the novel by Michael Shaara, gives you a bit of everything, a love story, a sports film, some drama. It's a front-row view of "the loneliest place" in all of sport, the pitcher's mound. If you're a baseball fan who has never seen this film, move it to the top of your watch list today.

NUMBER 3: “Bull Durham” (1988 MGM) Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Robert Wuhl, Tery Wilson, Jenny Robertson. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple iTunes Store.
  • Once again: Kevin Costner! Arguably one of the most beloved baseball films of all time, "Bull Durham" is loaded with "movie quotes" we love.  "Lollygaggers" of course and many more.  Watch it to find your favorites or email them to us on our CONTACT PAGE. You've got it all in this film, great baseball, hot and steamy romance, comedy, drama, even poetry! It's all here. Hit the bull and get a free steak! Watch Bull Durham today!

NUMBER 2: “The Natural” (1984 TriStar Pictures) Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger, Robert Duvall. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple iTunes Store.
  • Based on the 1952 novel of the same name by Bernard Malamud, "The Natural" is a fantastic fable of one man's tragedy and glory.   Nominated for four Oscars including "Best Actress in a Supporting Role" for Glenn Close, and directed by master filmmaker Barry Levinson (one of his finest works in our opinion), "The Natural" is a timeless classic.  For those of you born after 1990, you probably haven't seen "The Natural" so sit yourselves down, put away your iPhone or Android, and watch it today!

NUMBER 1: “Field of Dreams” (1989 Universal Studios) Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, Gaby Hoffmann, and Timothy Busfield. Available on Amazon Prime Video or Apple iTunes Store
  • A screenplay, adapted from W.P. Kinsella's novel "Shoeless Joe" some contend that "Field of Dreams" is less of a baseball film and more of a fantasy-drama.  Sure, we get that. There really isn't that much actual baseball in the film, it's more character-driven and rooted in the retelling of history. It is also tethered to the tarnished past of the "Black Sox" scandal. Regardless, "Field of Dreams" is our number one baseball film period.  It poignantly captures the spirit of the game and reminds us all of what's important.
