PENNY MARSHALL

Carole Penny Marshall, (October 15, 1943 - December 17, 2018)
Known by most for her role as the street smart and lovable "LaVerne DeFazio" on the hit series "LaVerne & Shirley" (ABC 1976 - 1983), Marshall paved the way for female directors and producers with successful and lucrative films. She will be missed.
Picture
“Big” (1988 Fox), Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins, Robert Loggia, John Heard. Available on, Amazon Prime and Apple TV. Also currently available on Hulu.
  • With "Big" in 1988, Penny Marshall became the first female director to have a film gross over $100 Million. Many also argue that this is the film that really made Tom Hanks a household name.  Lovable story, a must see for all.

"Jumpin' Jack Flash" (1986 Fox) Whoopi Goldberg, Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz, John Wood. Available on Amazon Prime.
  • This is Penny Marshall's big screen directorial debut, and  an early  action/comedy role for Whoopi Goldberg. "Jumpin' Jack Flash" also includes a favorite of ours, the late Phil Hartman.

Picture
"A League of Their Own" (1992 Columbia Pictures)  Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Jon Lovitz, David Strathairn, Bill Pullman, and Garry marshall. Available on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
  • "A League of Their Own" is certainly in the top five baseball movies of all time. (A list which we'll be sure to bring you on or about February 18th when Pitchers and Catchers report to spring training.)  This film gave us one of the most memorable lines in film history: "There's no crying in baseball!". Snubbed by the Academy in it's day (at least we think so), "A League of Their Own" did receive Golden Globe nominations for both "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical" for Geena Davis and "Best Original Song - Motion Picture" for Madonna and Shep Pettibone.  "A League of Their Own" is an all time film favorite, a "Surf Stopper" whenever found on cable TV.

Picture
"Awakenings" (1990 Columbia Pictures) Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Ruth Nelson, Penelope Ann Miller. Available on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
  • Based on the 1973 memoir of Oliver Sacks, and nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Picture "Awakenings" was Penny Marshall's third film and her first for which she was both director and executive producer.  Excellent performances by both Robert De Niro and the late Robin Williams garnering a "Best Actor in a Leading Role" Oscar nomination for De Niro.
