TOP 15 ZOMBIE MOVIES
Why 15 and not 10? Because we make the
rules here! Not you!

We're going to do something here that no other site like ours is willing to do (alright we really haven't looked into this claim, but we're fairly confident that other sites shy away from this sort of thing).  WE'RE GOING TO GIVE YOU JUST A LIST! That's right! No "click bait, see what they look like now...click through a thousand pages to get to the facts when all you want to see is the list" horse hockey!  Just a real  list.  Yes! A list of the top 15 zombie movies of all time (in our opinion anyway; you may disagree, and if so feel free to tell us why on our CONTACT page).

Why 15 movies and not just 10? Well, two of them are remakes worthy of listing, one of them is a sequel
which we actually like better than the first, and one of them is only available on DVD (wamp wamp wamp waaaaa). We thought some of you may consider including the remakes as well as the originals to be "cheating", we also thought stopping at 14 would be odd, so we settled on 15. You're welcome!
Also, a short note about lists: "Top whatever" lists, are always subject to change.  Who knows when the next great "zombie" film will be released?   That release could upend our entire order...so this list may grow and change over time.  We'll do our best to stay on top of it and listen to your feedback as well!

NUMBER 15 “Here Alone” (2016 Easy Open Productions) Lucy Walters, Gina Piersanti, Adam David Thompson. Available on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • This is a well-made independent film.  It's not heavy on the zombies, it deals more with the aftermath of a plague and what it takes to survive.  Well worth the watch!

NUMBER 14 “World War Z” (2013 Paramount Pictures) Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, Sterling Jerins, Abigail Hargrove Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • Ok, we're kind of on the fence about this one. They added something we don't like: "fast-moving zombies". Zombies by definition are "slow-moving". Fast-moving zombies are not zombies, they're just rabid people!  Also, "World War Z" is based on a really awesome book by Max Brooks that deals with "regular speed" or "actual" zombies.  Honestly you could skip this film and just read the book. We hope HBO or somebody else (WAKE UP AMAZON!) turns the book into a multi-episode limited series (with regular-speed zombies as per the book!). THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! Anyone?! Hello?

NUMBER 13 “28 Weeks Later” (2007 Fox Atomic) Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Amanda Walker, Shahid Ahmed. Available on Hulu, Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • They couldn't just leave it at "send in the helicopter", and everything was sunshine and daisies. No! They had to let the "Rage" virus escape yet again!  This is the sequel to our #12 selection, which follows next...

NUMBER 12 “28 Days Later” (2002 Fox Searchlight) Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson, Megan Burns, Noah Nuntley.  Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • Ok, some people argue that this isn't so much a "zombie" movie as it is a "rabid people" movie because yes...again "fast-moving" zombies or "the infected" as the film calls them.  But we believe the "zombie" category is where it falls. We like it, great cast, interesting concept.

NUMBER 11 “What We Become” (2016 IFC Midnight) Mille Dinesen, Mikael Birkkjaer, Marie Boda. Available on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • This is a Danish zombie film, and we have yet to see it as an "American" remake, which is a good thing because the original is well done.  Think of it as the film that gave birth to the idea of "Fear The Walking Dead" (That's probably not true but just ignore us...most people do!)  WARNING: GET YOUR GLASSES OUT: this film features English subtitles.

NUMBER 10 “Zombieland” (2009 Columbia Pictures) Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Amber Heard, and Bill Murray. Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • This is so excellent! Yes, it's got "fast-moving zombies" which we don't consider "classic zombies" but it's an all-star cast and totally legitimizes the "zombie" genre of films.  We can watch it over and over again.  Amazon tried to make an "Original Series" out of it, we watched one episode and got mad at Amazon for even trying!  YOU DON'T MESS WITH PERFECTION! We can't stay mad at Amazon though, we love them! We seriously hope that they consider our suggestion of a proper remake of "World War Z".

NUMBER 9 “Shaun of The Dead” (2004 Focus Features) Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, Penelope Wilton, Bill Nighy, Dylan Moran, Lucy Davis Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.  Also currently available on Netflix.
  • Simon Pegg and Nick Frost seemed to be on a mission to make themselves the modern day, British "Abbot and Costello".  This is the film that started a great collection for them, one which we'll be sure to honor in future months. "Shaun of The Dead" however, stands out as the best comedic zombie film to date! Watch it!

NUMBER 8 “Land of The Dead” (2005 Universal Studios) Simon Baker, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Asia Argento, Robert Joy. Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store. Also currently available on HBO GO/NOW.
  • The last major studio production of a George A. Romero Zombie film.  This one legitimizes Romero's genre by giving it not just a major studio backing, but two "A-list" stars: Dennis Hopper and John Leguizamo.

NUMBER 7 “Dawn of The Dead” (2004 Strike Entertainment)   Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, Mekhi Phifer, Ty Burrell, Michael Kelly.  Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store. Also currently available on HBO GO/NOW.
  • The problem with this remake is that this is where, all of the sudden, zombies move "fast". We blame this movie for the whole "fast-moving" zombie problem! Shame on you Strike Entertainment! We kind of think that the reason the George A. Romero original isn't available for streaming is because of someone involved with this remake! (No we have no way of proving that so again, just ignore us). The only benefits of this remake is that you get to see Ty Burell (a.k.a Phil Dunphy of "Modern Family") as a zombie...who wouldn't love "Zombie Phil"? And Ving Rhames is awesome!

NUMBER 6 “Day of The Dead” (1985 United Film Distribution Company) Lori Cardille, Terry Alexander, Joseph Pilato, Howard Sherman, Richard Liberty, Anthony Dileo Jr.  Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • This is a solid follow up to George A. Romero's 1979 classic "Dawn of The Dead".  It's not a sequel, just a different story, which takes place after the events of "Dawn of the Dead". It's not the greatest zombie story, but in our opinion #6 is a fitting spot on the list for "Day of The Dead".

NUMBER 5 “Dawn of The Dead” (1979 United Film Distribution Company) David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger, Gaylen Ross. Available on DVD from Amazon Prime.
  • We ran into a snafu with this one, IT'S NOT AVAILABLE FOR STREAMING! (Yeah we  also uttered a bad word or two when we found out.)  If you grew up in the 1980's in the "VCR" era, this one may have been your first exposure to the zombie genre, it's a classic! It's the real "Shopping Mall" zombie movie.  That may be why it's not available, because of that stupid remake! Look for George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" (1979) at your local library, and dust off the DVD player!

Picture
NUMBER 4 “Resident Evil Apocalypse” (2004 Screen Gems) Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Sophie Kretschmann, Oded Fehr, Mike Epps, Jared Harris, Razaaq Adoti.  Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • This is the first sequel to "Resident Evil".  "Apocalypse" picks up right where the first one left off, and then takes you on a wild ride that shows the fall of the first city and spread of the zombie plague.  We think "Apocalypse" is better than the first one, and you just can't watch it without having seen "Resident Evil".

NUMBER 3 “Resident Evil” (2002 Screen Gems) Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius.  Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • This is an excellent way to start an epic series of zombie films.  The "Resident Evil" collection of zombie films are based on a video game, which makes them part of a genre of zombie films unto themselves. This one gets the number 3 spot because it's the first of a rare few zombie films that offer an actual explanation for the zombie plague.

NUMBER 2 “Night Of The Living Dead” (1990, Columbia Pictures) Tony Todd, Patricia Tallman, Tom Towles, McKee Anderson, William Butler, Katie Finneran, Bill Moseley, Heather Mazur. Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • The remake of the original is so perfect! It's almost the same script word for word.  Just imagine the first one done in color with modern effects.  Bam! This goes right into the "REMAKES WE LIKE" category.

NUMBER 1 “Night Of The Living Dead”  (1968, Image Ten) Duane Jones, Judith O’Dea, Karl Hardman, Marilyn Eastman, Keith Wayne, Judith Ridley, Kyra Schon. Available on  Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • "Night Of The Living Dead" CELEBRATED IT'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2018! This is the original, George A. Romero classic – the zombie movie that started it all!  This 1968 film gets the number one spot for that reason alone.  You can't call yourself a Zombie aficionado if you haven't seen it.  So watch it!
