INTERNATIONAL
 TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY

Yes, it’s really a thing! No, we’re not kidding! "International Talk Like a Pirate Day" (ITLAPD) has been in existence since 2002 (1995, actually). If you don’t believe us, you can check “Wikipedia” (those people are never wrong!).  Today we’re taking some time out of our busy schedule to pay homage to “Cap'n Slappy” and “Ol' Chumbucket” themselves by giving you five great movie recommendations for the day.

Pirate movies were once a staple in Hollywood. Back in the 1940’s and 1950’s they were abundant, but then something happened on the high seas – we don’t know why, but the “Pirate” movie went out of fashion. Until about 2003, when Johnny Depp first put his hair in a weave, donned the tri-corner hat and gave us “Captain Jack Sparrow”.  Five films to date, quiet the franchise! All of them worth the watch too, but the first one is still the best, so that’s what you’re getting today. (Or should we say: "That's what ye be having today...arrrrgggg!")

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl”  (2003, Walt Disney Pictures) Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Jonathan Pryce.  Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • This movie is just so fun! How could you not want to watch it again? If you’ve never seen it, wow! Get your head in the game!  SEE THE ENTIRE SERIES here.

“Six Days, Seven Nights” (1998, Touchstone Pictures) Harrison Ford, Anne Heche, David Schwimmer, Jacqueline Obradors. Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • No, you’re right, it’s not really a “Pirate” movie, but there are pirates in it, and at one point Anne Heche belts out a pretty good "Arrrrggg!" You could argue that makes it...sort of a "Pirate" movie?

“Cutthroat Island” (1995, Lionsgate) Genna Davis, Matthew Modine, Frank Langella. Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store. Also currently available on HBO GO/HBO NOW.
  • This is one of the biggest box office flops in modern movie history! That’s not to say it’s a horrible film, it just didn’t do well at the box office. As far as “Pirate” movies go, really, it’s not the worst.

“Pirate Radio” (2009, Focus Features) Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Chris O'Dowd.  Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store. Also currently available on HBO GO/NOW.
  • Also not technically a “Pirate” movie, but a good film and historically relevant for Rock and Roll!
This film has a good sound track too!

“Captain Ron” (1992, Touchstone Pictures) Kurt Russell, Martin Short, Mary Kay Place, Meadow Sisto, Benjamin Salisbury. Available on Amazon Prime and Apple iTunes Store.
  • Long before there was "Captain Jack Sparrow", there was "Captain Ron". This might be a “Pirate” movie? There are pirates in it…so.  Hey it’s fun, just watch it.  If nothing else you’ll want to go on vacation somewhere warm or maybe even buy a boat!
